The Montana State Rodeo team was founded as a student club by four men intending to put on a contest for fellow MSC students in 1947. Eugene Pederson, Stuart Hauptmann, Bob Chambers, and Ralph Nichols took their ideas to the college agriculture (or "Little International) club and got $100 in sponsorship money. James McClellan Hamilton was born October 1, 1861 in Crawford County, Illinois and came to Montana in 1889. In 1893, when the University System was created and the State Board of Education was established, he was named a member. In 1901 he became Professor of History and Economics, then vice-president of Montana State University shortly thereafter. Merrill G. Burlingame (1901-1994) was a history professor at Montana State University. In 1956 the law firm of Wilkinson, Cragun, Barker and Hawkins retained his services as a historical researcher for their litigation against the United States government on behalf of Montana's Blackfeet tribe. Burlingame assisted the firm by gathering pertinent materials from his research.
